The root flare is the visible widening where a tree's roots transition into the trunk at the soil line, typically visible as a natural buttressing at the base.

This structural feature is most visible at or just above the soil surface and serves as an anatomical anchor for the entire tree. A healthy root flare typically widens outward from the trunk before diving into the soil, creating a tapered base rather than a straight cylinder.

When trees are planted too deep, soil is mounded over the root flare, or mulch is piled against the trunk, several problems can develop. Buried root flares trap moisture against the base of the tree, promoting rot, disease, and pest damage. Roots forced to grow upward or in circles around the trunk may eventually girdle the tree, cutting off nutrient and water flow. Trees planted with visible root flares establish stronger, more natural root development and are better equipped to resist wind, disease, and environmental stress.
