What is a critical root zone?

The critical root zone is the circular area surrounding a tree's trunk where most of its absorptive and structural roots are located, typically defined by the tree's drip line or canopy edge, and protected during construction or soil disturbance.

The critical root zone extends from a tree's trunk outward and contains the roots responsible for water and nutrient uptake as well as physical stability. For most mature trees in Westchester County, this zone reaches to or slightly beyond the drip line, where the outer branch tips meet the ground. Smaller or younger trees may have smaller zones, while large oaks, maples, and conifers can require protection areas 40 feet or more in diameter.

Damage to roots in this zone during construction, grading, or utility work can weaken a tree's structural integrity and reduce its ability to absorb water. Even partial soil disturbance, compaction, or trenching can cause decline that develops over months or years.
